This may not be revelant but i figured i’d post this anyway. If you’re using ubuntu 8.10 you may be in for some issues with the network manager. For some unknown reason it stops functioning. You will need to manually set you’re resolv.conf with your ISP’s DNS servers. That file is located in /etc/network/resolv.conf
Ok … (Hands in the air) … I gave up … a few weeks ago I reinstall linux (ubuntu) on my EeePC 701-SD. Have Firefox, Email, RSS feeds and various ham radio software packages running under wine.
Love the podcast. But please … I was going to give linux a try but did you have twist my arm so hard.
I listen to the podcast at work on my ipod … so it is a few days later that I hear the podcast after it’s release.
I live in Australia and will be moving to the United Kingdom in January 2010.
Have you got a logbook software package that I could install that will work on the small screen of my EeePC?
Looking forward to tonight’s UStream….whatever that is. I found Linux in the Ham Shack about a week ago & I’ve listening to each podcast over the last few days & now I’m looking forward to tonight’s episode. I’m frustrated with Windows. My kids’ computers have the 2009 Anti-Virus virus, so I’m going to convert them to Linux Mint plus I’m getting this Window Genuine Authenication notice because I bought a used “GoBook” laptop on e-bay w/the Windows certification but I didn’t install the orignal CDs/DVDs so I’m getting harassed by MS.
On the ham radio side, I run remote operation using IP-Sound or SKYPE for the audio link & then I go through http://www.logmein.com which gives me remote control of the ham shack computer (Dell desktop running XP). Ham Radio Deluxe is the software controlling my Icom IC756Pro3. I can operate remote from inside the house on sub-freezing mornings…the ham shack is in an outside storage building….or when I’m on the road, I’ve operated remotely from 1500 miles away.
On my night stand sits my “GoBook” laptop, and I”m going to try converting it to Linux Mint. I guess I can use FireFox & go to http://www.logmein.com for control & SKYPE for Linux. HOW ABOUT SSH…the shell you talked about? Is it for control only or will I be able to get audio remotely with it, too?
Since I got caught up on “Linux in the Ham Shack,” I’ve started listening to “mintCast.” It great for a Linux newbie.
Built my first computer back about 1981. It was a “Big Board” computer with a Z80 chip, 4 MHz, running CP/M operating system w/two 8″ flopping drives, single-sided, single-density 160K each plus 64K RAM>
